Announcement from CEO Martin Coles

Announcement from CEO Martin Coles

I am delighted to announce that we have completed a renewal of our Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the MOD.   This together with a new Partnering Charter reaffirms the strong relationship between the Sea Cadets and the Royal Navy and sets out the basis for this over the next five years.

The MOU has been greatly improved, with the inclusion of an Accounting Officer role in respect of Grant in Aid monies, clarification of the on-going support, including use of facilities and a set of strategic objectives against which to measure our continued successful delivery of the organisation.

In a period of considerable flux for the Royal Navy and MOD the time and effort applied to this renewal at the highest levels is impressive and a clear demonstration of the level of support and confidence in the Sea Cadets.  It is of course also testament to the work of the Sea Cadets in inspiring young people through fun and adventurous nautical activity and the traditions and ethos of the Royal Navy to learn new skills and gain a head start in life.

Sea Cadets carry Common Wealth nation's flags ahead of Gloriana

Sea Cadets carry Common Wealth nation's flags ahead of Gloriana

54 Trinity 500’s, in diamond formation, carrying a flag for each of the Commonwealth nations will take the lead in front of Her Majesty’s barge, Gloriana, on the Thames on June 3 2012.
They will be joining over a 1000 vessels set to travel the seven mile route down the Thames in a spectacular celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The flotilla will pass under 14 bridges in ten separate sections each marked by vessels carrying playing musicians.

Londoners got a preview of the big day earlier in the month when 15 Trinity’s took to the water at Putney for a dry run of the course. 60 cadets from units across the region including, Rickmansworth, Southwark, Rugby, Eastbourne, Tewksbury and Oxford maneuvered the craft with skill and dexterity impressing the Port of London Authority and MP Jim Fitzpatrick who were watching from a launch alongside.

On the day 300 cadets will motor from Wandsworth Bridge to Tower Bridge, helping the Queen to celebrate 60 years since her coronation.

London mayor unveils £1.3million commitment to help young Londoners at Sea Cadet unit

London mayor unveils £1.3million commitment to help young Londoners at Sea Cadet unit

Sea Cadets in Merton got a special visit from Boris Johnson, London Mayor today when he made a flying visit to the unit to meet 100 young people and volunteers from eight Youth Uniform organisations that make the YOU Matter Program. He was launching

In plans outlined by the Mayor today, thousands of youngsters will have the opportunity to join uniformed groups like the Guides, Scouts and Cadets. The £1.3 million programme, being run by the Safer London Foundation, will help young people to  develop vital skills, helping them to get a head start in life.

Thirty-eight new uniformed groups will be opened over three years, two-thirds of which will be in boroughs with areas of high deprivation. Already 100 new adult volunteers and 1,000 youngsters have been recruited. By the end of 2014 this will increase to 1,000 volunteers, which will enable 8,000 young people currently on the waiting lists across the capital to join uniformed groups.

The initiative is part of Team London, the Mayor’s strategy to harness volunteers to deliver key projects to improve the quality of life and opportunities of Londoners

The Mayor got stuck in and tried his hand at  drill commands, carried out an  inspection where he took time to talk to all of the young people involved.

“Uniformed groups are a fantastic way for youngsters to get involved in a myriad of activities, which will help equip them with the skills they need to succeed in life," Boris Johnson said.

"It’s a modern tragedy that so many of our young people are struggling to get a foothold in the jobs market and are drifting into crime. By instilling self reliance, discipline and a sense of competition, young people can aspire to a better future."

This was a great opportunity for the Sea Cadets to highlight their commitment to the YOU Matter program and to show of a superb Sea Cadet unit and what we do.

Cadets march for Trafalgar Day Parade 23/10/2011

Cadets march for Trafalgar Day Parade 23/10/2011

Sea Cadets aged between 12 and 18 marched into Trafalgar Square, London, today to celebrate the 206th national Trafalgar Day. A spectacular ceremonial display of marching band, ‘Skip Jump’ and club swinging by 500 young people entertained spectators at the iconic London landmark.

Army and Air cadets also took part and the Platoons of each cadet force were inspected by Royal Marines, Major General Buster Howes OBE and Captain Mark Windsor RN, Captain Sea Cadet Corps.

Sea Cadets led Platoons with a traditional blue jacket parade from the Mall to Trafalgar Square, with an 80 strong marching band, joined by the Army and Air cadets.

This is the highlight of the Sea Cadet calendar with cadets aged 12 to 18 taking part.  Cadets across the UK only had two days to practice and coordinate  their moves for the very exacting and precise ceremonial display they performed together in Trafalgar Square in front of 2000 spectators. It is a reflection of the hard work, dedication and passion these young people have invested throughout the year in their respective cadet activities, that they can deliver such a show stopping parade.

National Trafalgar Day is an opportunity for them to showcase their skills and talent to dignitaries from the Royal Navy and to London’s spectators and tourists.

Sea Cadets are the UK’s largest maritime youth charity established in 1856 and working across the UK in 400 towns with 14000 Sea Cadets aged between 10 and 18.  Cadets learn vital life skills like leadership and team working via nautical adventure activities, and can earn extra qualifications which help boost confidence and give young people a head start in life. visit sea-cadets.org
